Two themes have dominated the news agenda in Spain over the past few weeks. One has been the weather. The other has been Cristiano Ronaldo. The first is nothing unusual. Every summer, with the thudding inevitability of an Atlético Madrid Champions League defeat, television companies dispatch reporters to the beach to confirm that it is, indeed, very hot. And everyday men in white coats pop up to share gems of summer wisdom with the watching masses such as the brilliant advice of drinking water when you are thirsty or avoiding standing in the sun like an eejit for hours on end when it is particularly hot.

Rafael Van der Vaart was presented as Real Madrid’s “first and only” signing of the summer yesterday and everyone, but everyone, was thinking about the same thing: His wife.  And now La Liga Loca’s doing exactly the same. Time for Italy to restore some pride at international level after the fiasco of Euro 2008 – and where better than at the Olympic Games. After all, it’s basically a mini-version of the World Cup, minus a couple of big names. Italy would not have been there if England had of taken their place following their fourth-place finish at the European Under-21 championship. The fifth-placed young Italians had to overcome Portugal in a penalty shoot-out to secure at trip to China.

Having promised to pack his team with the finest young Spanish talent available, Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón has continued his great Iberian initiative by recruiting Rafael van der Vaart from Hamburg - the side's fifth Dutch player. And this must surely be the tipping point for the music in the dressing room as it swings from the infernal sounds of flamin' flamenco to the Happy House stylings of 2 Unlimited.

A recent survey has claimed that Italy is becoming an ageing population and the current generation are not doing their bit to produce upstanding citizens for the future. The upshot is that everyone is going to have to work longer before they can head off into “happy” retirement.Good news then for Alessandro Del Piero, who fits the demographic of the modern Italian perfectly: early 30s, married, one very young child. And the Juventus captain is willing to keep working until his legs finally give out.

"Hey you! Yeah, you! You with the girl's name! Wuss!" La Liga Loca has started the day with a couple of shandies and is feeling feisty. "Yellow belly! Cowardy Custard! Bottler!" The blog has spotted Joan Laporta - well, an imaginary version of him - and is giving the Barcelona president a piece of its tiny mind. The man with the emotional control of an overtired eight year old has shown himself to be the biggest of girl's blouses with his ongoing battle with The Man to bring Leo Messi back from the Olympic games.
