FFT's Five Finds: Kedah boost as Smeltz starts with a bang

FourFourTwo looks back at the weekend just gone in Southeast Asian football and discovers lessons to be learned, stars re-born and the impending return of a major player...

1. Smeltz stars to start his Malaysian sojourn.

New Zealand star Shane Smeltz has scored goals everywhere he has gone in a long and varied career and the same seems to be happening with Kedah.

After scoring both goals in his team's 2-0 win over T-Team at the Malaysia Cup in midweek, he then faced the same opposition and netted the only goal in the weekend's Malaysia Super League win.

Smeltz has scored goals throughout his career and has started well with Kedah

It was a fine strike too: a swivel and a shot to earn three points to put the Red Hawks into fourth place.

It may just be a good start and nothing more, but the record of the 34-year-old, the second highest goalscorer in the history of Australia's A-League, suggests that the goals will come at a reasonably regular rate.

Smeltz’s signing shows there is value in the market for players from overseas. Clubs that do their homework will be rewarded.
