With the Malaysian league season over, it's now time for 16 select teams to battle for Malaysia Cup supremacy. Ooi Kin Fai previews all four groups in this opening stage...
What happened in the league?
Selangor have been consistently inconsistent this season. The Red Giants only strung three wins together once all season, spending most weekends alternating between winning and losing. Afiq Azmi’s dry spell in front of goal in the latter part of the campaign meant that third place was the best Mehmet Durakovic’s side could achieve.
Did anything go wrong?
Selangor's results are reminiscent of a flat track bully, with the Red Giants losing out on head-to-head against the top two sides but garnering plenty of points against weaker teams through the course of the season. In fact, Johor Darul Ta'zim and Pahang are the only teams which Selangor failed to beat this year in the Super League.
What went right?
No one expected the combination of Hazwan Bakri, Afiq and Guilherme de Paula to be an efficient working unit. However, it seems to have worked a treat – dovetailing Hazwan’s shooting abilities, Afiq’s aerial strength and Guilherme’s guile on the ball perfectly.
Player to watch
Hazwan is the one to watch. With his confidence soaring, he has been given a licence to roam and more importantly, is often the go-to player for a quick counter attack.
Top of the pile in a three-way fight.
