Aidil vows to do his best against Dortmund
The Malaysia international has slowly made his way back to first-team football after being troubled with injuries for the past year, and is now aiming for a starting role against the Bundesliga giants on Thursday night.
Dortmund have started their pre-season in style, winning 5-0, 17-0 and 6-0 in their three friendly matches so far, but the experienced defender believes a defeat for the Southern Tigers is far from a foregone conclusion.
“There’s no denying that they are in sizzling form, but anything can happen in football,” Aidil told FourFourTwo Malaysia on Wednesday.
“We want to prove that we can compete with a great team such as Dortmund.
“Plus, unlike those times when Malaysia played against Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal, we can call upon our import players, who can really make a difference.”
For Aidil, pride will also be at stake in that match because since the club’s rebranding in 2013, JDT have lost only once in all competitions at the Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium – a 2-1 defeat to Selangor in the 2013 Malaysian FA Cup.
“Even though the match against Dortmund is only a friendly, I hope that we will be able to preserve our home record," he said.
“It is something we are very proud of and we will not go down without putting up a good fight.”
Far from feeling the pressure of facing the likes of Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa, Aidil expressed his excitement to test himself against the international stars.
“I am thrilled that JDT have this opportunity to play against Dortmund," he said.
“We will be able to compare our level and gain valuable experience from playing against world-class players."
