Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah will resign from his role as President of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
The decision was made following a record 10-0 loss to the United Arab Emirates earlier this month, which saw head coach Dollah Salleh resign as well.
However, Tengku Abdullah stated that his departure will be done in stages and he will discuss with the exco members about temporarily handing over power to deputy president Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah.
"At the moment I am still holding the position on merit until 2018, so I will only resign by then," he was quoted saying to a group of reporters in Kuantan.
He defeated Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Royal Patron of the Johor Football Association, in last year's election for the top post.
