Fandi believes LionsXII dealt tough hand in Malaysia Cup

LionsXII coach Fandi Ahmad has warned against taking their Malaysia Cup Group A opponents lightly, after Singapore's representatives were drawn against Terengganu, Kedah and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) II.

The draw for the 2015 Malaysia Cup was held by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) at the Hilton Hotel Petaling Jaya on Thursday, with 16 teams divided into four groups.

"There are many strong teams in this competition," Fandi said. "We are in quite a tough group because Kedah just won the (Malaysia) Premier League and they will be very eager to perform in the Malaysia Cup.

"There is also Terengganu, whom we have already faced five times this season, and they are a very complete team.

"Playing against them is going to be very difficult."

The Turtles hold the upper hand when it comes to match-ups again LionsXII this year, beginning with a 3-1 pre-season victory when Paulo Rangel plundered a hattrick.

Things did not get better during the Malaysia Super League season, as LionsXII drew 1-1 at home before suffering a heavy 4-2 defeat away to Terengganu.

The one positive was in the Malaysia FA Cup, as a 2-1 first leg win at Jalan Besar Stadium and a 3-2 loss away in the second leg was enough to send LionsXII through to the final on the away goals rule.

Fandi will also be wary of the third opponent in the group, Malaysia Premier League team JDT II, who boast veteran Singapore internationals Shahril Ishak and Baihakki Khaizan in their ranks.

“We still have to face JDT II, so we will just take it on a game-by-game basis," the LionsXII coach said. "We must take this seriously and use the FA Cup victory as motivation to do well.

"It won’t be easy, so I really hope the fans will come out in full force to support us at Jalan Besar Stadium."
