Kuching-born defender Dion Cools was given a major boost in confidence when he received his first-ever call-up to Belgium’s under-21 side…
Cools received the Belgium under-21 call-up after coach Johan Walem’s squad was hit by several injuries.
Defenders Jason Denayer and Joris Kayembe had to pull out, leaving Walem short on defensive cover for Tuesday's 2017 European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Latvia.
Brugge defender Cools had previously played at the under-18 and under-19 level for Belgium and is primed to take the next step against Latvia.
A win will allow the Red Devils to secure a spot in the playoffs for next year’s finals in Poland as one of the best second-placed teams.
Despite the under-21 call-up, Cools can still represent Malaysia in future as he has not been capped by Belgium at senior level.
