Malaysian FA Cup Wrap: Pahang see off JDT on penalties

Pahang began their FA Cup defence with a 4-2 shootout victory over Johor Darul Ta’zim after both sides could not be separated at 1-1 after extra-time at the Darul Makmur Stadium.

After relentless attacking moves in the opening exchanges, the home side deservingly went one up in the 20th minute when Matias Conti headed a Dickson Nwakaeme cross past JDT goalkeeper Farizal Marlias.

Shortly after the goal, it went from bad to worse for the Southern Tigers, who recorded only two wins in their past six matches prior to this FA Cup clash, as both S. Chanturu and Jasazrin Jamaluddin had to be replaced due to injuries.

Pahang continued to dominate the majority of the match while goal-scoring chances were few and far between for JDT, as the Elephants kept a disciplined shape to frustrate them.

However, Bojak Hodak’s men finally found their equaliser with 10 minutes remaining in regular time.

Singapore midfielder Hariss Harun was found unmarked from a corner and had enough time to lash the ball into the net to send the game to extra-time.

Both sides held firm during the additional half an hour before the referee signalled for the shootout, where Pahang emerged victorious.

JDT substitutes Luciano Figueroa and Junior Eldstal failed to convert from the spot, while they scored all of their penalties, handing the Super League champions an early exit from the tournament.

Pahang will next face FAM League side MISC-MIFA in the second round.
