Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman believes the Premier League is a better competition when Manchester United are a force to be reckoned with.
The Red Devils have been struggling since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, with David Moyes and then Louis Van Gaal failing to hit the high standards at the club.
Most recently United suffered their worst start to a season since 1986-87.
Despite his close ties to Liverpool, McManaman backed United to bounce back quickly for the sake of the league.
“I am not the kind of person who wants to see them relegated or will necessarily be bothered if they finish fifth, sixth or seventh,” he told FourFourTwo during Carlsberg’s Ultimate Football Retreat event at AVANI Sepang Gold Coast in Malaysia.
“I like it when they play well because it makes the league more exciting and interesting.
“I think the Premier League is stronger when there is a good Manchester United team, likewise a good Liverpool team and the rest of the Premier League clubs.”
