Merdeka Tournament cancelled

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have decided to cancel this year's Merdeka Tournament to allow the national Under-23 squad to focus on the upcoming 2014 Asian Games.

The Harimau Muda were victorious in last year's tournament, where they beat Myanmar 2-0 with goals from Rozaimi Rahman and Junior Eldstal.

However, FAM Secretary-General Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said that Datuk Ong Kim Swee's boys will depart for China instead in early September to undergo training and play friendly matches before heading to Incheon, South Korea, where the Games will be held from September 19 to October 4.

"We have yet to confirm on what teams we will face in China," he said after introducing Dollah Salleh as the new head coach of the national senior squad at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya today.
