Zola backs Hazard to be Chelsea’s greatest player
The 23-year-old Belgian has been sensational since joining the Blues from Lille in 2012, firmly establishing himself as a key player for the club.
He was also named the PFA Young Player of the Year as well as the Chelsea Player of the Year last season.
After helping Chelsea to make an unbeaten start in all competitions so far, Zola has now tipped him to make it into their hall of fame.
“Right now, Hazard is doing fantastically well for the club,” the Italian said during Carlsberg’s Ultimate Football Retreat event at AVANI Sepang Gold Coast in Malaysia.
“I think he is the kind of player who will grow in stature and get better and better.
“So, I will not be surprised if he becomes one of Chelsea’s greatest players in the future.”
As for Zola himself, despite being voted by the Chelsea fans as their greatest player in history a decade ago, he has since been replaced by Didier Drogba, who returned to the club this season after leaving in 2012.
When quizzed about his ‘dethronement’, Zola laughed it off and praised the Ivorian striker.
“I’m very honoured and delighted to have been considered as their best player of all time.
“Chelsea are a great club, so there will always be fantastic players coming in.
"I have no problem with Didier [or anyone] taking the crown.
“He has given fantastic contributions to the club and helped them to win many titles, so he deserves it.”
