BUENOS AIRES - Banfield moved within touching distance of their first Argentine league title after a Victor Lopez header earned them a 1-0 win over bottom club Tigre late on Wednesday.
A win over Boca Juniors in the final round of the Apertura championship this weekend would seal the title. Sole challengers Newell's Old Boys, two points behind, must beat San Lorenzo Juniors to have any chance of overhauling the leaders.
With goal difference not taken into account, a Banfield draw and Newell's win would result in a play-off for the title.
Newell's maintained their hopes of pipping Banfield with a 2-0 away win over Gimnasia-La Plata in which Uruguayan striker Joaquin Boghossian took his tally to 11.
Title holders Velez Sarsfield, away to Chacarita Juniors in their penultimate match late on Thursday, are out of the running eight points behind Banfield.
