Bianchi leaves Boca

BUENOS AIRES - Boca Juniors have confirmed Abel Alves as their new coach in place of Alfio Basile, who resigned last week, and also announced the departure of manager Carlos Bianchi.

Reserve team coach Alves, who has been first team caretaker on three occasions, was appointed for the first half of the year, Boca president Jorge Amor Ameal told a news conference.

Basile quit after a 3-1 defeat by arch-rivals River Plate in a friendly plunged Boca deeper into crisis.

Former coach Bianchi, who led the club to a string of national and international titles between 1998 and 2003, left after refusing to take over the team.
