Brazilian Ailton joins lowly Uerdingen

BERLIN - Former Bundesliga top scorer Ailton signed an 18-month deal with KFC Uerdingen on Wednesday and will play in Germany's regional league, the club said.

The 36-year-old Brazilian, the first foreigner to win Germany's footballer of the year award in 2004 when he won the championship and cup double with Werder Bremen, also had stints at Hamburg SV, Besiktas and Red Star Belgrade.

"There was speculation for many weeks but now it is official: the Brazilian will wear the Uerdingen shirt for 18 months," said the club, which plays in the regional Lower Rhine league.
