Brendan Rodgers named Reading boss

LONDON - Brendan Rodgers has been named the new Reading manager, the Championship club said on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman only joined fellow Championship side Watford in November.

"Once Brendan had confirmed his desire to discuss the opportunity, we were powerless to prevent him doing so," Watford chairman Jimmy Russo said on the club's website.

Steve Coppell, who took Reading into the top flight of English football for the first time in 2006, stood down in May.
