Chancellor Merkel to visit Germany team

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit her country's national team at their Euro 2012 base in Gdansk on Wednesday, holding a brief address and dining with the players, team officials said.

"She will visit this evening, she will arrive and we will greet her," said team manager Oliver Bierhoff. "She will address the team, dine with us and then depart again."

Merkel is a fervent supporter of the team, often seen wildly cheering in the stands, as she did during the previous European Championship in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.

The German chancellor has even visited the players in the changing rooms, causing a minor stir in October 2010 when she was photographed chatting to midfielder Mesut Ozil who was not wearing a shirt following their victory over Turkey in Berlin.

"This is a great honour and a good omen for us," said defender Per Mertesacker. "Her speeches are always brief yet incisive. It also shows the status of the team."
