European Footballer of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo has, for once, been ignored for an award after being left out of a team of 2008 by Barcelona prodigy Lionel Messi. The Argentinean starlet, who was pipped to the 2008 Ballon 'Dor by Ronaldo, selected the Manchester United star's team-mates Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney in the side - with Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson managing the team - but left no place for the Portuguese winger himself. Instead, Messi opted for Barca team-mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta, Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas and Javier Zanetti of Inter Milan in his fantasy midfield. "He [Ferdinand] is very good in the air, very strong on his feet...very difficult to get past," Messi told uefa.com, also commenting that Rooney: "has a great shot, good control of the ball, uses his body well in the area. He is a great goal-scorer. I love this type of player." Ronaldo was included in another Argentine's elite XI for 2008, with Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero selecting the United winger, along with fellow Premier League stars Petr Cech, Ricardo Carvalho, Rio Ferdinand and Cesc Fabregas in his dream team of the year.
