Davies backs Downing

Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies is confident new signing Stewart Downing will help fill the void left by Gareth Barry. The former Middlesbrough midfielder joined Villa for £12 million last week, but will be out of action until at least October due to a broken foot. However, central-defender Davies is confident that when the left winger returns, he will make an immediate impact. “Stewart is obviously a top player, an England international, who has been in the squad regularly under Fabio Capello as well as Steve McClaren," he said. "He's a great signing. He can play anywhere across the middle of the park and also he gives us that edge so that, with Gareth [Barry] leaving, we got a top quality player coming in. "I don't think he can play for a few months but I'm sure when he comes in he will be top drawer." And the 24-year-old, who has made 47 league appearances for the Villa Park outfit since arriving - initially on loan - from neighbours West Bromwich Albion, is hopeful that manager Martin O’Neill will add more signings to the squad before the start of the season. “I am sure the gaffer wants to build the squad. Last summer I think we signed something like six players,” he said. "If people see the progression we have made as a team, and we get the right names here, they could help push us into the top four."
