Demichelis set for cheekbone surgery

BUENOS AIRES - Argentina defender Martin Demichelis needs a cheek operation after being injured during his side's 1-0 win over Germany in a World Cup warm-up in Munich on Wednesday, team doctor Donato Villani said.

"Demichelis suffered an indentation of his cheek bone. It requires surgery," Villani told the Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports, adding the Bayern Munich defender would be fit for the World Cup in South Africa starting on June 11.

The central defender was carried off after he was accidentally kneed in the face by Germany midfielder Michael Ballack when a high ball came into the Argentina box 10 minutes into the second half.
