RIO DE JANEIRO - Two goals from striker Edu helped Internacional beat Atletico Mineiro 3-0 in the Brazilian championship on Wednesday, the victory closing the gap at the top of the standings to one point behind leaders Palmeiras.
Argentine midfielder Andres D'Alessandro (pictured), who came on as a second half substitute after serving a five-match suspension for attempted aggression and unsporting conduct, set up one of Edu's goals and scored the team's other.
After 22 matches, Palmeiras have 41 points, Inter 40, Goias 38 and title holders Sao Paulo 37 in the four qualifying places for next year's Libertadores Cup.
Fifth-placed Corinthians beat Santos 2-1 to move to 36 points after defender Chicao scored an own goal to put the visitors in the lead but made amends by heading the winner in the 88th minute. The match was a 23rd-round fixture.
