Friedel and McCartney red cards rescinded

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel and Sunderland defender George McCartney had the red cards they received on Sunday rescinded by the Football Association's disciplinary panel, the clubs said on Tuesday on their respective websites.

Friedel was sent off during Aston Villa's 5-0 defeat by Liverpool when judged to have brought down striker Fernando Torres. Villa appealed saying Friedel had tried to avoid contact with Torres who fell after running into the goalkeeper.

McCartney was sent off after 15 minutes of Sunderland's 1-0 loss at Manchester City for dragging back Shaun Wright-Phillips, but the panel ruled he did not deny the City forward a scoring opportunity.
