BUCHAREST - A second-half goal from Alberto Gilardino gave Fiorentina a 1-0 triumph at Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday and a place in the UEFA Cup. Fiorentina finished third in Group F on six points while bottom of the table Steaua extended their miserable record to 17 Champions League games without a win. Steaua's Polish defender Pawel Golanski was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the 72nd minute. Bayern Munich ended as group winners, three points ahead of Olympique Lyon. Gilardino brightened up a dull match by scoring the only goal with a perfectly-placed header from a corner by defender Juan Manuel Vargas in the 66th minute. There was unpleasantness in the stands though as fans threw flares on to the pitch. Earlier, Steaua almost opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Colombian playmaker Dayro Moreno went close with a powerful 30-metre free kick. Adrian Mutu then missed Fiorentina's first clear chance in the closing stages of the first half when the Romania striker shot poorly from a good position.
