Injuries aplenty ahead of Arsenal opener

LONDON - Arsenal will be without injured duo Manuel Almunia and Robin van Persie for Wednesday's Champions League match away to Belgian side Standard Liege.

Goalkeeper Almunia has a chest infection and will be replaced by Vito Mannone or Wojciech Szczesny for the Group H match as reserve Lukasz Fabianski recovers from a knee injury.

Dutch forward Van Persie sustained a knee injury in Saturday's controversial 4-2 defeat at Manchester City, which left him with a bloodied face following a stamp by former team mate Emmanuel Adebayor.

"From Saturday we lost Robin van Persie with a knee problem but it is a question of days for him (until he is fit)," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the club website.

Brazilian midfielder Denilson has also been ruled out with a back problem, together with Samir Nasri, Andrei Arshavin, Johan Djourou and Carlos Vela.
