Iwelumo suffers metatarsal misery

MELBOURNE - Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Chris Iwelumo will miss the start of the English Premier League season after breaking a bone in his foot in a pre-season match in Australia.

The 30-year-old Scottish international limped off the field early in the match on Friday after a clash with Perth Glory midfielder Jacob Burns. Wolves beat the A-league club 1-0.

"It was purely an accident but Chris has broken his metatarsal," Wanderers coach Mick McCarthy told the club's website.

"It is a big disappointment for him and it is a big disappointment for me as well because we have lost him for a number of weeks."

Iwelumo, who helped Wolves into the English top flight with 14 goals last season, was making his first appearance since suffering medial ligament damange against Birmingham in April.
