Jansen to miss Germany tour of Asia

BERLIN - Hamburg midfielder Marcell Jansen will miss Germany's brief Asia tour at the end of the month due to a virus, the German Soccer Federation (DFB) said on Friday.

Coach Joachim Loew is now left with only 17 players, two of whom are goalkeepers, for the friendlies against China in Shanghai on May 29 and United Arab Emirates on June 2 in Dubai.

The DFB said Loew would decide after the end of the Bundesliga on Saturday whether to call up another player.

The Euro 2008 runners-up are without captain Michael Ballack, whose team Chelsea are in the FA Cup final, and injured Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder.

Seven more players from Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen, who are in the German Cup final on May 30, will also be missing.

Loew has already recalled Middlesbrough defender Robert Huth after almost two years and included newcomers Manuel Neuer, Schalke's first choice goalkeeper, VfL Wolfsburg's Christian Gentner and VfB Stuttgart duo Brazilian-born Cacau and Christian Traesch.
