Liverpool eye Defour deal

Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour is a target for Liverpool this summer, according to both the player and his agent. The 21-year-old has made 94 league appearances for the Belgian outfit since arriving from Genk in 2006. And he impressed against both Liverpool and Everton in European competition last summer, as Liege pushed the Reds to the brink of Champions League elimination in qualifying, before knocking the Toffees out of the UEFA Cup. And Anfield boss Rafael Benitez is now believed to be eyeing up the playmaker - along with Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani - as a potential replacement for Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso. The Bernabeu outfit are also reportedly poised to move for Defour - presumably if they fail to sign Alonso - with both Everton and Aston Villa linked with the player in the past. And Defour has revealed that an offer to join the five-time European champions would prove too good an offer to turn down. "I have an agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the bill," he said. While his agent, Paul Stefani, confirmed Liverpool's interest in the midfielder. "Steven's name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool, they are looking at him too," he said in the Daily Mail. "Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those and Liege would not stand in his way."
