Marseille back boycott of PSG match

PARIS - Olympique Marseille backed their fans who boycotted Sunday's Ligue 1 game with Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes as a protest against security measures imposed by the authorities, the club said on Saturday.

"Olympique Marseille's board has been informed of the Marseille fans' boycott. (Chairman) Jean-Claude Dassier and the board understand them and (will) support them... by not coming to Parc des Princes either," the Provence side said in a statement on their website.

Authorities wanted to put the visiting fans under police escort for their coach journey from Marseille to Paris.

There were clashes between rival supporters in the centre of Marseille when the scheduled first meeting between the teams this season was postponed last October just hours before kick-off due to an outbreak of swine flu in the PSG squad.
