McLintock: Vermaelen can become Gunners great

Former Arsenal captain Frank McLintock believes the Gunners' only summer signing Thomas Vermaelen has the potential to be a hugely successful player for the club following his impressive start to the season.

The Belgium international has hit the ground running since signing for the Emirates Stadium outfit, netting on his debut in the 6-1 rout of Everton on the opening day of the season, and scoring another three as well as proving to be a dominant presence at the heart of the Gunners' back-line.

Arsene Wenger's side host Olympiakos on Tuesday aiming to seal a second successive victory in Europe after coming from 2-0 behind to win 3-2 at Standard Liege on matchday one.

And McLintock - who made more than 300 league appearances for the club from 1964-73 - believes the £10 million signing from Ajax has all the attributes to become a mainstay in the North London's defence for many years to come.

“He's athletic, has a great spring, alive and alert, taking charge and telling other players about pushing up after the ball's cleared, and settled in from his very first game,” he said in The Independent.

“If he can keep that up, he'll be a fantastic player for Arsenal.

“He's winning headers in the box both ends of the pitch, and that's been one of the failures.”
