Merson: Arsenal should have recruited Kranjcar

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has revealed his bemusement that Tottenham Hotspur target Niko Kranjcar has not been the subject of interest from the Gunners.

Harry Redknapp appears set to raid former employers Portsmouth for another of their prize assets by recruiting Kranjcar, having already snaffled Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch to White Hart Lane since leaving Fratton Park last Autumn.

The 25-year-old Croatian international's arrival could not be more timely, after his international team-mate Luka Modric suffered a broken leg in the weekend win over Birmingham, sidelining him for around six weeks.

But Merson, despite conceding that Redknapp has - once again - completed a shrewd piece of business by bagging the midfielder, admitted that the Gunners are missing out by not making a move for the playmaker.

“That's a great buy,” he told skysports.com.

“I think he's a great player. This is a long, long season and Tottenham don't want to do what Aston Villa did last year when their season fizzled out after a few injuries.

“Harry Redknapp doesn't want to fall into that trap and wants to get the personnel to change his team.

"Kranjcar is a very good midfield player and I'm majorly surprised somebody like Arsenal wasn't looking at him.”
