Mexico maul Venezuela in Gold Cup warm-up

ATLANTA - Giovani dos Santos scored twice as Mexico beat Venezuela 4-0 on Wednesday in a warm-up for next month's Gold Cup in the United States.

Mexico took 45 minutes to break the deadlock at Atlanta's Georgia Dome but ended up as convincing winners with Carlos Vela and Omar Arellano also getting on the scoresheet.

They went ahead when Vela scored from a cross by Dos Santos, who then grabbed two quick goals for himself early in the second half.

The forward's first was a left-footed drive in the 48th minute and two minutes later he pounced on the rebound after keeper Rafael Romo had parried his initial effort with his chest.

Coach Javier Aguirre's team made it four on the counterattack in the 73rd minute when Arellano scored from Omar Bravo's pass.

Mexico, who have another friendly with Guatemala in San Diego on Sunday, are in Group Three with Nicaragua, Panama and Guadaloupe at the July 3-26 Gold Cup in the U.S.
