ROME - Adrian Mutu's manager said on Wednesday he expected the Fiorentina and Romania striker to get a short suspension for twice failing drugs tests in January.
Mutu, who was given a seven-month ban and sacked by former club Chelsea for using cocaine in 2004, said he accidentally took appetite suppressant sibutramin in a herbal medicine.
"It is not as if he killed someone. It was a doping accident," Mutu's manager Giovanni Becali told reporters after a hearing at the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
"He has acknowledged he is guilty of not checking with the doctors whether he could take that medicine. From what I hear, there will be some form of suspension, maybe three months, four months, two months."
CONI's anti-doping prosecutors are expected to say shortly what punishment they will seek for Mutu at a sporting tribunal. He is appealing against an order to pay Chelsea 17 million euros in compensation for the first positive test.
