Sporting off the mark with win at Academica

LISBON - Sporting recorded their first Portuguese championship win of the season on Sunday when goals by forwards Liedson and Yannick Djalo gave them a 2-0 win at Academica de Coimbra. Sporting struggled to create chances in the first half and coach Paulo Bento's introduction of Simon Vukcevic at the break paid off when the Montenegro player beat a defender to cross for Liedson to head in on 64 minutes.

Academica did not threaten to equalise and were further hampered when midfielder Miguel Pedro was sent off for a second yellow card in the 76th minute. Djalo added Sporting's second five minutes before the end.

Leaders Braga kept their 100 percent record with a 3-1 home win over Belenenses, with Hugo Viana scoring two goals in the second half.

Braga have nine points from three matches, followed by Porto, who beat Naval 3-1 away on Saturday, on seven points. Sporting are fifth with four points.
