Van der Sar eager to extend stay

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s goalkeeping problems could be eased following reports suggesting veteran Edwin van der Sar is eager to extend his stay at Old Trafford for another season.

Speculation has been rife that the 39-year-old will hang up his gloves at the end of the current campaign, but the Dutchman is now willing to sign a 12-month extension, according to The Sun.

Van der Sar has helped the Red Devils to three Premier League titles and two successive Champions League finals since his arrival from Fulham in 2005.

Ferguson has been linked with a move for CSKA Moscow’s Igor Akinfeev and Schalke’s Manuel Neuer in the upcoming transfer window to fill the void when the former Dutch international’s contract runs out at the end of the season.

His manager, however, has insisted understudies Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak are ready-made replacements and are more than capable of deputising in Van der Sar’s absence.
