CAIRO - Portuguese Nelo Vingada has backtracked on a deal to coach African champions Al Ahli, the Egyptian club said on Wednesday.
Ahli announced last Friday that Vingada would join on a two-year contract.
"The board of Al Ahli has decided, upon Mr Vingada`s request, to accept his apology not to continue with the team due to emergency family reasons," the club said in a statement.
Vingada, who managed Saudi Arabia in 1996 and 1997, is a familiar face in the Middle East.
In 2004, he took charge of Zamalek, Al Ahli's arch rivals, before a brief stint with Egypt's Under-23 team. He has coached Jordan since 2007.
Vingada was due to succeed compatriot Manuel Jose, who helped Al Ahli win 19 trophies including five straight league titles and four African Champions League crowns in two separate stints. Jose left Ahli last month to take over as Angola coach.
