Wenger narked by moves for Merida

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that midfield starlet Fran Merida has verbally agreed a new contract with the club, and expressed his annoyance at Atletico Madrid's attempts to unsettle the player.

The 19-year-old former Barcelona prodigy continues to impress at the Emirates Stadium, scoring his first goal for the club in the recent League Cup success over Liverpool with a 25-yard screamer.

As a result, the talented teenager has attracted interest from his homeland in the form of Atletico, with the the player's agent, Joseba Diaz, recently revealing that Merida's head had been slightly turned by interest from the rojiblancos.

However, Gunners' boss Wenger has since moved to quash talk of the youngster leaving North London, revealing that the player has agreed a new deal, in principle.

“He has an offer which he has agreed, but has not signed yet.

“Some clubs are doing their work behind our back to destabilise him.

“We cannot stop that, but it is a fact.”
