Wenger: Vermaelen is a fighter

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed new signing Thomas Vermaelen following his impressive early-season form in the Premier League.

The defender - who has 21 caps for his country - has made a solid start to his Gunners' career after arriving from Ajax in the summer, netting on his debut in the 6-1 drubbing of Everton at Goodison Park.

And the Frenchman has revealed that the stopper possesses all the necessary qualities to establish himself as a rock at the heart of the North London side's back line for years to come.

“Thomas has everything I like in a footballer,” he told the club’s official website.

“He doesn't talk a lot but he is convincing on the pitch. He is a competitor, a fighter.

“It's true, you must get over that first reluctance to say 'Is he tall enough to play in a central defensive position?'

“But he compensates with a good reading of the game and what people ignore is that he has a big leap, a fantastic leap, he's very good in the air.”
