Could you build an S.League-only Singapore side?

Kenneth Tan (with the help of Editor Zee Ko) explores one of life's greatest mysteries: the picking of players for Singapore's AFF Suzuki Cup title defence...

Singapore's 35-man provisional squad contains 22 LionsXII and Courts Young Lions players. The two teams are really quite similar, despite playing in different leagues; three players have even played for both sides this season.

It's a topic of much discussion (and much disdain) amongst local football fans. Are they being selected because they're in development teams, or is it really on merit — where the best players have basically been stockpiled by the two teams like Iraqi WMDs.

So what FFT set out to do, was pick a Singapore side consisting solely of players from the domestic S.League competition. With the exception of the Courts Young Lions players of course, because that would defeat the purpose of this whole exercise.

Would such a team be competitive enough to retain our title? How many of these players would the common man on the street recognise? Is there space for Precious Emuejeraye or will Aleksandar Duric have to return from his well-earned retirement?
