With all the Premier League football action kicking off this week in Singapore, FFT's Zee Ko takes a look at several fresh new faces appearing at the Singapore Sports Hub...
Joselu – Stoke City
- Name: José Luis Sanmartín Mato
- Date of birth: March 27, 1990
- Place of birth: Stuttgart, West Germany
- Nationality: Spain
- Height: 1.91m
- Position: Striker
"[There’s] a huge TV contract coming next year, so everybody is trying to spend money to stay in the Premier League this year," Mark Hughes explained as Stoke City arrived in Singapore last week. "If we get the right players and we’re successful in acquiring them, then we’ll be better than ninth this season."
It remains to be seen if Joselu falls under that bracket, after the German-born Spaniard was signed from Hannover for €8million this off-season, the biggest transfer fee the Potters have paid under Hughes.
The 1.91m tall striker looks set to prove a handful for opposing teams, possessing not only height but also the pace to trouble Premier League defences. A former Real Madrid Castilla top-scorer, the 25-year-old will be looking to replicate the goal-scoring form he showed in Germany and justify his transfer fee.
Hughes will likely pair him up with compatriot Bojan up front, with the duo having trained together as Spanish youth internationals in the past.
"Joselu has an excellent pedigree and is a player we have been tracking for some time,” Hughes said. “He has skills and attributes that are different to what we already have within the squad but will complement the attacking players we already have at our disposal."
