With the Premier League of Thailand (PLT) considering introducing a rule to encourage clubs to sign an ASEAN player, the doors have opened for Singaporeans to follow in goalkeeper Hassan Sunny’s footsteps. Names like Hariss Harun, Safuwan Baharudin and Izwan Mahbud immediately come to mind, but who else could step up? FourFourTwo takes a closer look...
1. Hafiz Sujad
The left-footed utility is arguably the most consistent local player in the S.League this season. In 27 appearances (22 starts) in all competitions, he has seven goals and 10 assists to his name.
By contrast, star name Jermaine Pennant has only five goals, while notching only one more assist in the same number of appearances.
What makes Hafiz’s contributions more amazing is the fact that he has seen time in a number of positions – left-back, left-wing or in central midfield.
A look at his 2015 season with LionsXII suggests that it is not a one-off. Used mainly as a left-back by Fandi Ahmad, he still managed to score five times in 20 Malaysia Super League appearances.
His form over the last two seasons has led to him becoming one of the first names on the team sheet for both club and country. Never one to back down from a challenge and full of non-stop running down the wings, Hafiz would surely prove to be a valuable addition for any club in Thailand.
