With Serie A champions Juventus set to face Singapore Selection at the brand new National Stadium in 6 days, FourFourTwo continues to pick the starting XI we'd like to see take the field from both squads.
But here's the twist. Instead of posting our predicted lineups all at one go, Jeremy Lim and Dominic Neo will reveal one member of the team each day, as we count down the number of sleeps till the big match.
Without further ado, we present FourFourTwo Picks: The Right Central Midfielders.
Vidal is never gonna give it up
Position: Central Midfielder
Team: Juventus FC
To watch Arturo Vidal in Juventus shirt is to witness total commitment from the Chilean superstar on the pitch. Since joining Juventus in 2011, the midfielder has become a key driving force at the heart of the Bianconeri. His all-action displays in midfield have established him as a firm crowd favourite.
Opponents constantly have to look over their shoulder, rarely enjoying a moment’s piece when the 27-year-old is on their tail. Vidal’s tenacity and bite have earned him the nickname “El Guerrero” (The Warrior). Yet the Chilean is no mere midfield corporal, but rather a polished user of the ball who has repeatedly made his mark in the final third. Developing into an archetypal box-to-box player, the completeness of his game has seen ‘King Arturo’ become prolific at the other end too.
It’s no wonder his signature is one of the most sought-after in the world. “In my role, I am the best,” Vidal boasts. “Many try to imitate my style, but I want to say one thing - no one defends like me or scores as many goals as me.” And with their warrior just getting better and better with time, Juventus can keep aiming for new heights to conquer together.
Shahdan is never gonna let you down
Position: Central Midfield
Team: Singapore Selection
Club: Tampines Rovers
After a short spell out of the Singapore national team, this box-to-box, technical midfielder has now firmly cemented his place in the national set up. Shahdan was one of the few players to start and almost complete all three matches during the Lions Austria tour; he was substituted only during the last match against Dinamo, with eight minutes to go. Stange clearly believes in him.
The former LionsXII midfielder is an archetypal number 8 — a neat passer with great spatial awareness and stamina. Although not the most prolific of goal-scorers, the Tampines Rover midfielder is a composed and reliable set-piece taker.
At 26, Shahdan is at his physical peak. He has made great strides as a footballer over the last year or so, and this test against world-class midfielders will put him in good stead to really push on to the next level.
FourFourTwo will be at the Singapore Sports Hub on August 16 to watch the Singapore Selection take on Juventus FC. Will either of the French defenders come up big for their new sides? You'll only find out if you join us there! Tickets to the match - priced from S$45 to S$180 for adults and S$30 to S$45 for children – are still available at Sports Hub Tix (www.sportshubtix.sg). And don't forget a special National Day Promotion this weekend, with half priced childrens tickets when bought with an adult ticket. Additional adult/child tickets will also be 10% off.
