The English transfer deadline has passed. Historically some clubs have made deadline day steals, while others were left weighed down by regret. Here FFT present our 10 best and 10 worst deadline day moves...
The 10 Best:
Ashley Cole – Arsenal to Chelsea, 2006 – £5 million (S$8.9m)
For just £5 million, Ashley Cole can be considered one of the greatest bargains in Chelsea’s history. Granted, the Blues had to give up William Gallas in an exchange deal, but what Cole helped the club achieve more than proved his worth.
In nine years at Chelsea, Cole helped the club lift nine titles, including one English Premier League crown, four FA Cups and the 2012 Champions League – Chelsea’s first ever triumph in the competition. In total, he made 229 appearances and scored seven times.
Wayne Rooney – Everton to Man United, 2004 – £20 million
Fans may be divided on his worth to the team now, but once upon a time there was no doubt that having Wayne Rooney in the side greatly boosted the Red Devils’ chances of victory.
Boasting 524 appearances and 246 goals, the current Manchester United captain is comfortably one of the greatest players ever to don the famous red jersey, having helped the club to 14 titles all up in 12 seasons.
He has also been named in the PFA Team of the Year three times, the PFA Player’s Player of the Year once, the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year twice and the PFA Young Player of the Year twice.
