The likes of Abdil Qaiyyim have been performing with distinction this season and FourFourTwo have come up with 10 potential call-ups to V.Sundramoorthy's squad for the quadrangular tournament in June...
The time for international football has come around again, with Singapore set to take part in a four-nation tournament in Yangon from June 3 to 6.
The Lions will face hosts Myanmar in one semi-final of the 2016 AYA Bank Cup, with Vietnam and Hong Kong playing each other in the second one.
With the S.League having reached its halfway mark (more or less), FourFourTwo has come up with a list of 10 players who are in good form and did not make the previous squad. Perhaps this will give new coach V. Sundramoorthy a headache as he picks his first Lions team...
Syazwan Buhari (Geylang International)
League appearances: 13/13
The former Young Lions stopper has always been tipped as one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in the local game, having impressed during his time at the developmental side.
However, Syazwan has stepped up his game since moving to Geylang this season. Blessed with great shot-stopping ability, he has become a more commanding presence and has often kept the scoreline down for the Eagles.
Three clean sheets and the league’s fourth-best defensive record demonstrates Syazwan’s importance at Bedok and he is one of the best local goalkeepers based on current form. A match-winning display at the Sultan of Selangor Cup only served to enhance his reputation.
Khairulhin Khalid (Hougang United)
League appearances: 12/12
There were doubts over his installment as first-choice at Hougang at the start of the season, but Khairulhin has banished them for good now. The goalkeeper saw very little action during his LionsXII stint, but has taken the opportunity to show what he can do with both hands so far.
Khairulhin has kept four clean sheets – only Albirex Niigata (S) custodian Yosuke Nozawa has more – and more than played his part in the Cheetahs’ relatively good run this season.
An outstanding display against Tampines Rovers in May was memorable and “Khai” is a very viable national team option.
