AFF Suzuki Cup Group A Review: Philippines stroll into Semis, Laos crash out

Philippines and Vietnam both recorded resounding wins in their Suzuki Cup Group A fixtures on Tuesday, with the Azkals qualifying for the next round.

Philippines are the first team to qualify for the Semi Finals after seeing off Indonesia 4-0.

Philippines 4-0 Indonesia

Laos 0-3 Vietnam

Following their opening 4-1 win over Laos last Saturday evening, the Azkals came into the game against knowing three points would all but secure a spot in the Semi-Finals and did not disappoint in a game which they dominated from start to finish.

Phil Younghusband’s penalty in the 16th minute had set Philippines on their way, before Manny Ott’s stunning strike from 20 yards out doubled their lead.

Martin Steuble then netted a third in the 68th minute after Philippines were awarded an indirect freekick inside the box, before Rob Gier put the result beyond doubt with a close range strike.

The Garuda also ended the game with ten men, with Rizky Pora earning a straight red after he hauled Younghusband down as the last man.

Meanwhile, Vietnam edged closer towards a berth in the Semi-Finals with a hard earned 3-0 victory over a stubborn Laos side.

Vu Minh Tuan broke the deadlock for the Group A hosts with a simple finish after Le Tan Tai set him up with a brilliant through ball in the 42nd minute, before Le Cong Vinh and Nguyen Huy Hung scored just two minutes apart to ensure the points in the 82nd and 84th minute.

Laos, who defended stoutly in numbers throughout the game, are the first team to be eliminated from the group stages.

The results also meant that Vietnam will require only a draw in their final game against group leaders Philippines to advance, while Indonesia will need to defeat Laos by at least 7 goals and hope Vietnam loses to stand any chance of making the semis.
