Coerver Coaching: A different approach to football teaching in Singapore

Coerver Coaching co-founder Alf Galustian is heading down to Singapore in October, as the world-renowned Diploma in Youth Development coaching course returns to the country.

Based on the teachings of Dutch coach Wiel Coerver and founded by Galustian and Chelsea legend Charlie Cooke in 1984, Coerver Coaching has established a reputation as one of the world's leading coaching systems for youth development.

"It's a different approach to football teaching," said Galustian when FourFourTwo caught up with him on Tuesday.

"Most people approach football from the team angle and then down to an individual, rather than focus on the individual first, especially during the early developmental ages.

"They say in Japan that the golden ages of learning are between 7 and 12 and in football, there seems to be good evidence that teaching the core skills — receiving the ball, passing the ball, 1v1 and running with the ball — in those early ages will result in players being able to do them spontaneously later on, when you'll be able to focus on the game and the tactics."

The Skills Specialist coach also talked about the upcoming Diploma in Youth Development course, which has been held at Manchester City, Real Madrid and many other top European clubs in the last few years.

Presented by FourFourTwo Perfomance and held over a period of two days next month, the course will be delivered personally by Galustian, who is coming to Singapore for the first time in six years.

"Basically, the goals of it are to give participants an overview of the Coerver method, and why it is the world's No. 1 leading program," Galustian said.

"Secondly, we will be giving tips to improve your coaching and this is for coaches, whether they're professional or grassroots coaches or even parents.

"The third part is how to design your sessions for the season and how do these sessions make players and teams better, which we feel is a really important thing for coaches. In other words, tailor-made designing sessions."

The Diploma in Youth Development course will be held from October 4-5, 2014 at ITE College East.
