FAS release Nations Cup squad, Fandi brothers miss out

Despite both Fandi brothers being eligible for the Under-21 tournament, their names were conspicuously missing from the squad list…

Singapore under-21s will have to do without Irfan and Ikhsan Fandi for the Nations Cup held in Malaysia in June.

Singapore will face hosts Malaysia on June 3 and the winners will proceed to the competition’s final, where they will face either Vietnam or Thailand.

The Nations Cup is an important platform for the players to gain experience on the international stage

Irfan, 18, and his younger brother Ikhsan would have been eligible to turn out for the Singapore side but they are currently serving their National Service and may not have acquired the necessary permission to be released for the tournament.

Nonetheless, Singapore coach Richard Tardy was confident his squad would give a good account of itself come June.

“International exposure is a key aspect of player development. The Nations Cup is an important platform for the players to gain experience on the international stage and hone our preparations leading up to the SEA Games in 2017,” Tardy said in a press release.

“We have assembled a squad of young and talented players – with an average age of 19.5 – who are looking forward to this opportunity to play against their counterparts from Southeast Asia.”

Adam is Singapore's youngest player ever to get a senior international cap

The squad will be captained by Young Lions midfielder Ammirul Emmran, while 2010 Youth Olympic Games star Adam Swandi has been called up.

“International matches will allow us to test ourselves and learn from our opponents and we are pleased to be participating in the Nations Cup,” Adam said.

“Our under-21 team comprises players from the various S.League clubs and I am confident that we will grow stronger as a team in the lead-up to next year’s SEA Games. We understand that arrangements have been made for fans to travel to Malacca to support us and we will do our best in both matches.”
