Hougang coup as they secure Albirex standout, retain at least 13 others

Hougang United have signed centre-back Atsushi Shirota from S.League champions Albirex Niigata (S) and are well on their way to retaining their core group of players for 2017.

Recently crowned S.League Young Player of the Year and Singapore international M.Anumanthan also signed an extension with the Cheetahs, as did 2016’s breakout star Iqbal Hussain.

The club also managed to retain 2015 S.League Player of the Year Fumiya Kogure and he will be part of a midfield that includes Azhar Sairudin, who has reportedly rejoined the club he left for Home United two years ago.

The club announced Shirota’s signing on its Facebook page and stated that the Cheetahs were delighted to secure an outstanding defender for next season.

“The Nagano native is a big reason why Albirex boasted the best defence in the S.League, keeping clean sheets in half of their 24 games,” the club said.

Hougang United are very pleased to have him bolster our defence and welcome him on board into the Cheetahs' campaign of 2017. “

Hougang have also managed to convince 10 other first-team players to extend their stay at Hougang Stadium and believe more will soon follow suit.
