New Mitre S.League ball spells trouble for 'keepers

With the S.League adopting the new Mitre Delta Hyperseam as its match ball for the 2016 season, goalkeepers will be in for a tougher time.

That is the opinion of Albirex Niigata goalkeeper Yosuke Nozawa. Speaking to FourFourTwo at the Mitre Media Conference at Jalan Besar Stadium, Nozawa, who has worked with the ball for a few weeks now.

“The ball is light and, depending on how it is struck, it can move around in the air, so it’s harder for goalkeepers to predict where it will land,” he said.

Alfred Toh, general manager of Teamwork Sports LLP, licensee for Mitre for Singapore and Malaysia, added that the ball should please the league’s strikers.

“The Hyperseam is the fastest ball Mitre has created so far,” he said. “Strikers will be happier than goalkeepers and we should see more goals, not just in the S.League but also in the 2016 edition of the AFF Suzuki Cup, where it will be used.”

Khairul Amri, who will play for the Young Lions in the S.League this season, also gave the ball a thumbs up.

“Mitre was the official ball supplier at the last Suzuki Cup and I scored two goals with it,” he recalled. “The new version of the ball is even faster and hopefully it will mean more goals for me in the S.League and in the 2016 Suzuki Cup.”
