Myanmar head coach Raddy Avramovic says Singapore are still the favourites for Wednesday’s do-or-die match despite their loss against Thailand.
Avramovic, who is the most successful coach in AFF Suzuki Cup history with three championship wins with the Lions, vacated the Singapore job after ten successful years in 2012 and joined the Myanmar Football Association in February this year.
Since his appointment, Myanmar have improved dramatically, moving up the FIFA rankings by 36 spots.
Yet, he insisted that it will still be tough for Myanmar when they face the defending champions at the Sports Hub on Wednesday.
“Singapore are the favourites,” Avramovic said.
“It’s their home ground. People forget that Singapore have 16 players who were in the last squad that won the trophy.
“I think Singapore were unlucky to lose that game (against Thailand). That happened because they didn’t take their chances and in the end Thailand punished them for that.
“Singapore is a very good team.”
The coach was also critical of his side’s profligacy in front of goal in their opening game against Malaysia, which finished in a stalemate.
However, he claimed they would not roll over against Singapore, but refused to give away his game plan.
“Before the game (on Sunday) I would take a draw with Malaysia, but considering how the game went, I’m not satisfied with our attacking side because they should be more efficient and clinical,” Avramovic said.
“We should have scored one at least.
“(Whether) that will be enough to win in the end or draw, I don’t know, but we should have scored at least.
“(But) in general, (scoring is) not really a problem. Every game is different.
“For me it’s a really important game for us. It’s also an important game for Singapore. Anyone who loses will be out, it’s very simple.
“I take each game seriously, and we will see what happen. Each game is different. That’s the beauty of football.
“If people know what the results will be they won’t come for the game. People (fans) come to watch to have excitement and for us, each game we try to take some points.
“(But what’s my game plan), that, I won’t discuss.”comments
