Sharpe lighting up the SCC Sixes this weekend
The 43-year-old celebrity guest player, who was the star turn in the first batch of young players to emerge in the Red Devils’ set-up under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, will feature in the over-35 Masters Category with defending champions CLA All Stars.
While Sharpe has previously visited the republic, this is the first time he will be involved in the weekend-long tournament and he is eagerly looking forward to gracing the event.
“It is fantastic to be back in Singapore, and I intend to enjoy the event even though I am aware past guest star players have won the Masters before me,” he quipped at the pre-tournament press conference held at the SCC on Friday.
Into its seventh edition, the SCC Soccer Sixes prides itself as the pioneer for international six-a-side fixtures, while providing a platform over previous years to showcase emerging and promising Asian talent.
This year will see 32 teams competing in the Open and Masters Categories. The competing sides are pooled into groups of four and play in a single-leg round-robin format in the first day before splitting into the Main and Plate knockout tournaments the next.
Where past participating teams included A-League team Newcastle Jets and Thailand giants Chonburi FC, this edition sees local professional sides Geylang International and Home United feature in the Open event.
Both clubs will view this as part of their continuing pre-season preparations ahead of the upcoming S.League campaign which is set to commence in March.
Apart from the Open and Masters, there will also be a Youth Category in support of less fortunate footballing youths from Singapore, Bali, Phuket and Phnom Penh.
Not only will they get to compete against their regional peers, they will have an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the country through the various attractions.
Tournament chairman Owen Monaghan is heartened the SCC International Soccer Sixes is able to help make a small difference for the youth participants.
“The Organising Committee is also pleased to be able to share our love of football with our peers from the region to give underprivileged youth the opportunity to enjoy a weekend filled with fun and sporting activities,” he said.
The SCC International Soccer Sixes will be held at the Padang on 31 January and 1 February, which kicks off from 9am on both days. Admission to the weekend football festival is free and open to the public.
