Singapore U23s ended their final preparations for the SEA Games with a comfortable 2-0 win over Timor Leste U23s on Tuesday evening.
Key players Shahfiq Ghani and Irfan Fandi were once again on the scoresheet, as they defeated their opponents behind closed doors at Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Young Lions dominated proceedings, with Timor Leste restricted to only a few attempts at goal.
Shahfiq opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a splendid free-kick effort, making it four goals in his last three games for the Singapore U23s.
Teammate Irfan then sealed the win six minutes from time, evading his markers and getting on the end of a Afiq Noor free kick to arrow a bullet header into the Timor Leste net.
“It was a good result for us, and the boys put in a good performance,” said assistant coach S. Subramani.
“They are continuing to gel and the teamwork and understanding on the pitch was pleasing to see. They also showed a lot of hunger tonight.
“The learning point tonight is that our players must learn to keep their cool, stay focused and not let themselves get carried away by the heat of the moment.
“This is especially important in a football tournament like the SEA Games. When there are only six matches to play, cards and suspensions will be a crucial factor affecting the team’s fortunes and ability to be at full-strength. So the players must learn to avoid getting into card trouble.”
